Azerbaijan-Greece bilateral relations

SUMMARY

Facts and nature of bilateral relations

Greece recognized independence of Azerbaijjan on December 31, 1991.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Hellenic Republic were established on April 2, 1992.

Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Hellenic Republic of Greece was opened on April 16, 2004.

Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened on May 27, 1993.

Visits by Presidents

President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Konstantinos Stephanopoulos paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 20-22, 2004.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev paid a working visit to the Republic of Greece on August 12-16, 2004 to attend the opening ceremony of the 28th Summer Olympic Games.

President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Karolos Papoulias paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan on April 5-6, 2011.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev paid a state visit to the Hellenic Republic on June 15-17, 2014.

First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ms. Mehriban Aliyeva accompanied the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev on his state visit to the Hellenic Republic on June 15-17, 2014.

Visits by Primer Ministers  

Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Antonis Samaras paid a working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan on May 19-20, 2013.

Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Antonis Samaras paid a business visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan on September 19-20, 2014, to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the Southern Gas Corridor, and the event dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the “Contract of the Century”.

Inter-parliamentary relations

Working Group for the Azerbaijan-Greece inter-parliamentary relations in Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan consists of 10 parliamentarians. Mr. Bahruz Mammadov is the Head of the Group.

Speaker of Milli Majlis Mr. Oktay Asadov paid a working visit to the Hellenic Republic to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation on June 9-11, 2008.

Speaker of Milli Majlis Ms. Sahiba Gafarova paid a working visit to the Hellenic Republic to attend the European Conference of Presidents/Speakers of Parliament of PACE on October 20-22, 2021.

Number of legal documents signed

24 documents have been signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Hellenic Republic, 9 documents are unders consideration by Greece.

Economic cooperation (main directions and trade turnover for 2021-2023)

Co-chairs of the Azerbaijan-Greece  Intergovernmental Commission are:

Mr. Parviz Shahbazov, minister of energy of Azerbaijan; and

Mr. Konstantinos (Kostas) Fragkogiannis, deputy minister of foreign affairs of Greece.

The Commission has convened 4 meetings so far. The last meeting was held in Athens on May 26-27, 2016.
