Mr. Andreas Loverdos, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, visited Azerbaijan to participate at the first session of the Azerbaijan-Greece Joint Intergovernmental Commission on economic, industrial and technological cooperation. During the visit the Deputy Minister was received by H.E. Mr. Heydar Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
2004 April 16
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan signed a law on establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Hellenic Republic.
April 30
Mr. Evripidis Stylianidis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, participated at the meeting of Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) held in Baku. Heads of delegations were received by the H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
June 18-20
Delegation led by Mr. Evripidis Stylianidis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, visited Azerbaijan in connection with the forthcoming official visit of the President of the Hellenic Republic to Azerbaijan.

June 20- 22

H.E. Mr. Konstantinos Stephanopoulos, President of the Hellenic Republic, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan. During the visit he met with the President Aliyev,  Mr. Murtuz Alaskarov, Chairman of Parliament and representatives of the Greek Diaspora. Both Presidents also visited the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and President Stephanopoulos took notes in the Foundation’s honorary guest book. On June 22 the Greek President was awarded a diploma of honorary doctor of the Baku Slavic University. Then there was an opening ceremony of the Modern Greek Language and Culture Center held at the Baku Slavic University. During the visit the Agreements between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic on Mutual promotion and protection of investments, on International road transport and on Cooperation in customs matters were signed.

Business forum was held in Baku with a participation of 100 businessmen from Greece and 200 from Azerbaijan.

H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan appointed Mr. Mir-Hamza Efendiyev as Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Hellenic Republic
August 12-16
H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republicof Azerbaijan, visited Greeceto participate in the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games held in Athens. On August 13, President Aliyev participated in an official reception given in honor of the heads of states and governments from 120 countries, on behalf of the Greek President Stephanopoulos.On August 15 a Day of Azerbaijan in the framework of the Olympic Games took place at the hotel “Divani Caravel” in Athens. President Aliyev participated the event and delivered a speech. Next day President Aliyev met with H.E Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic.
2005 November 18
A bilateral meeting was held between H. E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and H. E. Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, at the opening ceremony of Turkey-Greece gas pipeline.
2006 July 5-6
Mr. Samir Sharifov, Minister of Finance of Azerbaijan, paid a visit to Greece and met with Mr. Dimitris Siufas, Minister of Development, Mr. George Alogoskoufis, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Evripidis Stylianidis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Makis Papageorgiou General Director of the Public Gas Company “DEPA” of the Hellenic Republic.

Azerbaijan–Greece Interparliamentary Friendship Group members Mr. Kharakopulos, Mr. Tsiaras, Mr. Karpuzas and Mr. Ahmad visited Azerbaijan and met with Mr. Oktay Asadov, Chairman of Parliament, members of Azerbaijan-Greece parliament friendship group.
July 4

Mr. Adalat Valiyev, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan visited Greece to take part at the first session of BSEC Ministers of Culture.

July 5-6 2nd meeting of Azerbaijan – Greece Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was held in Athens. At the meeting Azerbaijan was represented with a Delegation led by Mr. Heydar Babayev, Minister of Economic Development of Azerbaijan.
 August 2 Greek delegation led by Mr. Dimitris Siufas, Minister of Development visited Azerbaijan and was received by H. E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Mr. Siufas also met with Mr. Heydar Babayev, Minister of Economic Development. At the end of the meeting a “Memorandum of Cooperation between Greece and Azerbaijan in the Oil and Gas Fields” was signed.
2008 March 17  A Greek delegation led by the Development Minister Christos Folias visited Azerbaijan.

Visit of Mr. Yavar Jamalov, Minister of Defense Industry of Azerbaijan, to Greece to take part at the “Athens-2008” international defense industry exhibition.

June 4-6 Mr. Yaqub Eyyubov, Vice-Premier, and Mr. Azad Rahimov, Minister for Youth and Sport, participated in the International Olympics Committee meeting held in Athens.  
June 9-10 Delegation led by Mr. Oqtay Asadov, Chairman of Parliament visited Athens to take part in the PABSEC meeting.
June 19-20 Ms. Elsa Papadimitriu, Vice Speaker of the Greek Parliament, visited Azerbaijan in connection with 90th anniversary of Azerbaijani Parliament.

February 15-17
H. E.Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, paid a State visit to the Hellenic Republic. During the visit President Aliyev held meetings with H.E. Mr. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, Prime Minister, Mr. Dimitris Sioufas, President of the Hellenic Parliament and Mr. George Papandreou, Leader of Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement. During the visit the following documents were signed:Convention between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on capital;Air Service Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic;Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic on Cooperation in the Field of Information and Communication Technologies;Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Development of the Hellenic Republic in the field of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.During the visit the Azerbaijani-Greek business forum was organized. President Aliyev, President Papoulias and Prime Minister Karamanlis attended the opening ceremony of the forum and made speeches.
May 5-9
Members of Interparliamentary Friendship Group in the Greek Parliament visited Azerbaijan. Members of the Friendship Group were received by Mr. Ogtay Asadov, Chairman of Milli Majlis (Parliament) and Mr. Ogtay Shiraliyev, Minister of Health, and held meetings at AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) and Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The delegation also visited Lankaran and Lerik cities of Azerbaijan.

Business delegation led by Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited to Baku and took part in the Azerbaijani-Greek Business Forum attended by 40 businessmen from Greece and 120 from Azerbaijan.  During the Forum a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of the Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Varvitsiotis and Azerbaijani officials between the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and AZPROMO.

During the visit Mr. Varvitsiotis met with Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shahin Mustafayev, Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Rovnag Abdullayev, President of State Oil Company of Azerbaijan and  Mr. Gulmammad Cavadov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Energy.

Mr. Salim Muslimov, Chairman of the State Social Protection Fund of Azerbaijan, visited Greece to join “Democracy and Development: Experiences of Eastern Europe and Central Asia” international Forum.

February 24-25 Official visit of Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, to Greece. During his visit the Minister met with Prime-Minister, Chairman of the Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic.
April 5-6
Official visit of H.E. Mr. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic, to the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the visit Mr. Papoulias met with President, Chairman of the Parliament and Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, and also visited Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Baku Slavic University. Economic cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Hellenic Republic.

A joint commission was established between the governments of Azerbaijan and Greece to implement the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic on economic, industrial and technological cooperation” signed on July 26, 1994, based on the “V” article of the abovementioned agreement.

Upon Presidential decree number 72, dated November 27, 2008 Mr. Natig Aliyev Minister of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan was appointed a co chair of the abovementioned commission from Azerbaijan.
First session of the Joint Commission was held on April 10-11, 2003 in Baku and the second session was held on July 06, 2007 in Athens. Based on the Protocol of the last session a concrete cooperation agreements were reached between the two countries in the fields of energy, transport, communication and information technologies, tourism, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurship. At the same time directions of multilateral cooperation were set up. Thus, both parties have acknowledged the importance of cooperation in the BSEC. At the same time the Greek part supported the realization of ENP EU-Azerbaijan Action Plan and expressed its readiness for cooperation with Azerbaijan in this direction.

On March 16 – 18, 2008 a delegation led by the Greek Development Minister Mr.C. Folias visited Azerbaijan and held meetings at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Economic Development, Transport, Ecology and Natural Recourses of the Republic of Azerbaijan and SOCAR.

On September 8-9, 2008 the Greek delegation led by Mr. C. Folias participated in the “Azerbaijan – Turkmenistan Oil and Gas Potential: Energy, Economy, Ecology, Joint Strategy” conference held in Baku.

On February 17, 2009 Azerbaijan-Greece business forum on Business cooperation opportunities was held in Athens in the framework of Azerbaijani President H. E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev’s State visit to Greece. President of Azerbaijan, President and Prime Minister of Greece made speeches in the forum organized by AZPROMO and Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Presentations on business opportunities and investment climate, also bilateral meetings between business representatives of both countries were held during the forum.

On May 12-13, 2009 a business delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis made a visit to Baku. During the visit Mr. Varvitsiotis participated in the Azerbaijan-Greece Business Forum attended by 40 businessmen from Greece and 120 from Azerbaijan. Mr. Varvitsiotis delivered a speech at the Forum. During the Forum a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of the Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Varvitsiotis and Azerbaijani officials between the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) and AZPROMO.

class="page-title">Culture, Science, Education Cooperation in the fields of culture, science and education.

The humanitarian dimension remains one of the priorities of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece. Beside the exchanges on various fields within the framework of Program between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Hellenic Republic on cooperation in the fields of science, education and culture for the years 2011-2013, numerous cultural, educational and scientific visits and events have been arranged on the mutual basis.

On April 20-21, 2010 a charitable concert was organized in Athens by the Greek Charity Fund for children with oncologic diseases – ELPIDA, with the performance of Ms.Tunzala Aghayeva, popular jazz and pop singer of Azerbaijan.

On October 1, 2010, the Embassy held Azerbaijani classic music concert in Megaro Mousikis concert Hall of Athens which gathered more than 1000 people and left great impression among the spectators. The concert was conducted by Mr. Azad Aliyev, chief director of the Azerbaijani Symphonic Orchestra of Radio and Television and with the participation of famous pianist Farhad Badalbayli.

In February-May, 2011 the International Theatre School was launched in Athens on the initiative and support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The School was directed by Ms.Tamilla Kouliyeva, one of the leading Greek actresses and the education process at the studio was provided through series of lectures, seminars, master-classes, conferences on Azerbaijani and Greek culture, music and art. On April 26-28, 2011 Ms.Tamilla Kouliyeva also presented master-classes at the Modern Greek Language and Culture of the Baku Slavic University in Azerbaijan.

In April, 2011 students of several Hellenic Universities, including Athens State University, Patras University, Aristotel University and Athens Campus of Indianapolis University, who won at the essay competition on the topic “What I know about Azerbaijan?” made a study-visit to Baku.

In August, 2011 the students of Modern Greek Language and Culture Centre at Baku Slavic University paid a return study-visit to Athens and had a tour in the historical, archaeological sites and museums.

On October 12, 2011 Azerbaijani mugham-jazz music concert dedicated to the 20th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan was presented to the Greek audience at the Benaki Museum. The concert was performed by “Emil Afrasiyab and his friends” jazz group from Baku.

On October 14, 2011 Greek symphonic music concert directed by Viron Fidetsis was performed in Baku at the Azerbaijani State Philharmonic with the participation of Azerbaijani State Symphonic Orchestrate.

In November and December, 2011 Heydar Aliyev award of excellence in academic work impacting on Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani-Hellenic relations was established at the Patras University and the Athens Campus of Indianapolis University.

On March 12-15, 2012 a delegation of Azerbaijani experts from Academy of Sciences and Museum of Art paid a visit to Athens on the purpose of exchanging experience in the fields of preservation of manuscripts, contemporary and ancient arts, cultural heritage in the museums and National Library of Greece.
